Retired BNF #33

It's Black Friday and I decided to stay in my pajamas and relax. Everybody's still asleep so I was able to take my time drinking my coffee this morning. 

I realize it's been a long time since I posted a card using retired stamp sets. This stamp set was one of the very first ones I purchased from Stampin' Up! when I became a demonstrator thirteen years ago. It's called Sweet Seasons and I really love all four images that came in this set. It has an image of either a boy or a girl of four different seasons. Even back then I enjoyed coloring so I knew I had to have them. Over the years, I have acquired many stamp sets and let go of many, too. However, there are still quite a few that I know are keepers such as this set. Anyway, I am hoping I can find time to dust off my favorite retired stamps and use them. 

This card was so simple and easy to create. I just stamped the image on a watercolor paper and colored using my ink pads and Aqua Painter. It brought me much needed peace and refuge.

Wear Sunscreen

I apologize that the stamp set I used here has been retired, but I thought it would be appropriate due to the extreme heat we've been experiencing here in Northern California. I'm not big on beaches because I'm too vain to sacrifice my skin. Haha. But I love the smell of the sea and sounds of the waves.

I found this in my inbox of very old emails as I was deleting old messages and I thought it's appropriate for todays' card. 

Wear sunscreen.
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.
Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.
Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday.
Do one thing every day that scares you.
Sing.
Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.
Floss.
Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.
Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.
Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.
Stretch.
Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't.
Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone.
Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's.
Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.
Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.
Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.
Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.
Get to know your parents. You never know when they'll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.
Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.
Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel.
Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.
Respect your elders.
Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.
Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're 40 it will look 85.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.
But trust me on the sunscreen.

The Open Sea

To say that it's been an emotional week for me is the understatement of the year. I try every day to remind myself to separate my emotions from whatever it is that's going on at work. Some days, I'm successful and often, it keeps me up at night. It's not easy not to take things personally when you have been doing the same thing for twelve years and it's really hard not to get attached to people when you've worked together just as long. Someone I met very recently told me about how damaging having friends at work can be. All I could think of was, these people are my second family. I spend most of my waking hours with them. I laugh, cry, share meals with them and celebrate special occasions and birthdays with them. We fight, get frustrated with each other and also forgive each other. That's not just friendship, that is the definition of family. So, when I say goodbye to any of them, no matter the circumstances it still gets to me. Oh well, I will be fine. A little card making and a glass of wine will soothe me. 

My husband has been such an awesome source of support for me especially lately when I'd come home looking so discouraged. He's my anchor. Truly. So, this card is for him - my childhood sweetheart, my best friend and one true love. Happy Father's Day, love.
I CASED this card from a swap I received from Karin Braxton last year at Convention. I just changed the colors and sentiment. 

This stamp set called The Open Sea has just been recently retired, but I know it's an absolute keeper.

Retired BNF Friday #30

Happy Friday, everyone! It has been a very busy week and I just want to pop-in to share a card. I really enjoyed making this. The stamp set is very old from the early 2000 something I think. It's called Water Mill. As soon as I saw the brand new textured embossing folder Brick Wall (138286), I thought of this stamp set. I watercolored the image using classic stamp pads and Aqua Painters. So relaxing and therapeutic.

Retired BNF Friday #29

I am really looking forward to this weekend. I've had quite a week. I just want to drop by and share one of the cards we made in our Fancy Fold Cards class last month. I have been pretty obsessed with black and yellow lately. One of my new favorite stores is Charming Charlie. I just love that place. I enjoy walking in there and just be enveloped with all the beautiful colors and textures. I always get really good ideas from that store. All the more I have to visit it frequently, right? Haha. This card is actually inspired by a scarf I bought from there a few weeks ago. As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to make a card with the same color combo. Isn't it lovely? The contrast of bright sunshine yellow and matte black just balance each other. The card was a little laborious to put together, but it turned out awesome. So, I am very happy with it.

I CASED this card from a swap I received from Convention a couple of years ago.

Retired BNF Friday #28

It's been a long time since I posted a card under this category, so I thought I'd share with you this beautiful card I made a couple of months ago. This stamp set was a Hostess set from a couple of years back called Faith in Nature and to this day, it's still one of my favorites. I just love the versatility of the images and the quote is just timeless. It's as uplifting as Annie's song, "The sun will come up tomorrow." Whenever I find myself losing my balance, I always try and remind myself that everything is temporary...that I must not lose hope or courage. 

I also used card stocks from the new In Colors: Tangelo Twist and Mossy Meadow. Love this color combo, so very rich and autumn-ish.

Retired BNF Friday #27

Happy Friday, everyone! Well, in honor of Earth Day this past Tuesday I am sharing with you this masculine birthday card with trees on them. Time is running out before the 2012/2014 In Colors will be retired. Midnight Muse and Gumball Green combo? Very nice, right? Stampin' Up! published the retiring list this week and I was shocked at how much items are going to say farewell. I was sad, but not as much as how I normally would since I changed how I run my events/classes last year. Most of my gals are makers, so they just choose and pay for the cards they make. They don't care if I use current or retired items as long as the projects are nice.

Retired BNF Friday #26

It's about time I post another Retired But Not Forgotten card. I want to share an Easter card we did in class two weeks ago. I find myself wearing bright colors lately. I notice that it also shows on my cards. Pastel and soft colors usually indicate Easter and spring, but I thought I'd rebel against the norm and use bold colors. Haha!

The flower image is from the Best of Flowers stamp set. I love how it matches with the 1 1/4 Scallop Circle punch. It was such a simple and easy card to make. The layout is also versatile, just change the sentiment and one can use it for any occasion.

Retired BNF Friday #25

It feels like we never got any real winter weather here in Northern California this year at all. We are definitely overdue for rain and the news keep warning us of drought and possible water rationing. There was a little bit of rain, more like drizzle a couple of days ago...but not much in the form of precipitation. Let's just say my car did not even feel it. I think I need to wash my car because in the past, as soon as I wash it it'd rain big time. Oh well.

I don't want to end January without a Retired BNF card to share with you, so here it is. I really miss this stamp set called Tea Shoppe. I have a Stamping Event tomorrow, so I am just stopping by to post and then go back to getting ready for my event.

Retired BNF Friday #24

As parents, we are often quick to dismiss our children's wishes and force our own desires on them because we claim that, "we know best and we only want the best for them". My daughter called me on this recently simply by choosing a restaurant to eat in. I gave her options and when she told me where she wanted to go, I immediately shut it down and told her we are going somewhere else instead. She blurted out jokingly, "what's the point of asking me then?" It was not that big a deal, it was only a restaurant and in the end we went to her first choice, perhaps out of guilt on my part. My point is I feel that I have always been a very supportive and understanding mom to my kids. I feel so fortunate because I really have awesome children. However, I am and have been guilty of giving them choices then con them into picking what I wanted them to do to begin with. Since I am their mother, they often just do it trusting that my decision is the best. I must know what I'm doing. After all, I am their mother. But do I? I am not talking about which outfit to choose or which back pack will be sturdier and last longer. I meant in the grand scheme of things, when it comes to their future and what will bring them the most joy...do I have a clue? A few days ago, my daughter and I were in the car and she asked me if I'd always wanted to do accounting and HR work. Her question and curiosity caught me a little off guard. It's funny how when you've been doing something so long that after a while you begin to believe that it was meant to be. So, I told her the truth. I told her that when I was a little girl I've always wanted to become a lawyer. Then shortly after finishing the sentence, I asked myself quietly if that was even my own dream or I only wanted to fulfill my grandfather's dream for my mom. I realized that I still have not figured out what I really want to be when I grow-up. I do know for sure that I have always wanted to become a mom, I've always wanted a home to raise my children in and a husband who will adore me even when I annoy him (sometimes). And that I've always wanted to create pretty things. Well folks, I guess I did get my dream after all.

My son truly inspires me when it comes to going after one's dream and living with passion. He has always been a dancer before anything else and although he tried to do many things as a child, he never strayed from what brings him the most joy - which is dance. He knew there's barely no money in it, he is also aware that it requires hours of practice, hard work and plenty of risks. He still keeps on doing it. His passion shows even when he just talks about dance and how he and his team won first place recently at a dance competition in Berkeley, CA. He makes me proud. I was so happy that he was home this week.

I combined French Foliage and With Gratitude stamp sets to create this card. Card stocks are Old Olive, Really Rust and Very Vanilla. I used More Mustard, Really Rust, Old Olive and Chocolate Chip classic stampin' ink pads.

Retired BNF Friday #23

Thank goodness for 3-day weekends! I so need this to unwind and relax a little bit. For today's Retired BNF (But Not Forgotten) Friday, I would like to share this patriotic card just in time for Veteran's Day.

I've had a very weird couple of weeks. It seemed like every song I heard I'd wonder if it'd be appropriate for my funeral. I even made a list of music my family should play in my funeral just in case I die quite suddenly. I know, I told you I was having a really dark time. I don't know if it had anything to do with the weather, but I just felt really down. I've also been thinking about how I will be remembered. Someday when everything's been said and done and I am no longer around, how will the people I left behind remember me? When they hear my name, will they feel relief that I'm gone or will they always think of me with such longing and sadness? Will they remember me at all? This made me think of Stars in the Sky and how many people I know still talk about his kindness and generosity, especially around the holidays. He was also well-known for his holiday parties, crab legs galore, free frozen turkey and wine, the singing and the whole message of it all: gratitude to all his employees. He walked around with an apron happily serving away everybody. It was really extraordinary and everyone there walked away feeling appreciated and recognized. It's no wonder after all these years, he is still missed by the people who knew him.

Retired BNF Friday #22

I cannot believe that it had been six months since I posted a Retired BNF (But Not Forgotten) project. Shame on me, right? I am going to try my best to change that and not stay away too long.

I want to share with you this colorful birthday card. I used the Aviary stamp set and Everyday Enchantment DSP. I just love this color combination. I stamped the birdcage twice on Very Vanilla card stock, then cut it out and pop it up with stampin' dimensionals to give it a 3D effect.

Happy Friday, everyone! I have been busy organizing my paper scraps. If you're a paper crafter like me, I am sure you know what I mean when I say that my box of paper scraps have become almost unmanageable. I made it a goal to sort all the colors out, put them in individual folders with labels. Hopefully now I will use them...because I can see them. I love pretty papers and I just hate when they go to waste or left unused. So, I decided to make some Hershey Nugget goodies using scraps from last year's Sale-a-bration Everyday Enchantment Designer Series Paper to share with you today.

Retired BNF Friday #20

Can you believe it? The first month of 2013 is over! Happy Friday and Happy February to you all. It has been kind of an odd weather around here in Northern California. Really cold in the mornings and then it heats up to mid 60's by the afternoon. I was surprised when our A/C came on yesterday in the office. I think spring is almost here. Tomorrow is Groundhog Day, so we will find out.

Anyway, for today's Retired BNF (But Not Forgotten) Friday post, I want to share with you an old but very cute stamp set called, Monkey Business. I purchased it in 2005 and I have always found a way to use it every so often. It is still so darn cute. When my kids were small I always referred to them as my little monkeys, so to this day I am still a sucker for anything with cute monkeys on them. I don't think I will be able to part with this stamp set.

I used red craft ink pad, clear embossing powder & heat tool on the hearts.

Retired BNF Friday #19

The first full work-week of 2013 was very busy, but nice. I had to constantly remind myself each time I sign something of the new year. Yet, I know I will be writing down 2012 for quite some time, then I will get the hang of it. And by that time, it will be 2014. Such is life.

As I was going through my stash of greeting cards, I noticed that I don't have very many Masculine cards in my reserve. I decided to put together one from one of my favorite stamp sets called Coast to Coast. I have always loved light houses and it is my dream to one day visit one.

I embossed the image using a heat tool, black craft ink and embossing powder

Retired BNF Friday #18

It has been a very busy and full week for me. I am so thankful it's Friday. I am even more thankful that the world did not end today. I would like to share a card I made with a very old stamp set called Happiest of Holidays. This was the very first Christmas stamp set I purchased from Stampin' Up! October of 2005. I have been stamping ever since. Sometimes, I wonder what I'd do if I didn't read or do paper crafts to save me from completely having a nervous breakdown.

Oh well, it's definitely a rainy and blustery day. I have places to go, but I feel like staying in bed. I think I will, I so deserve a lazy day.

Retired BNF Friday #17

I have been secretly struggling with something for a few weeks. It was literally stressing me out to the point that I was getting sick. Today, I finally decided to let it go. I believe that I have done everything I can think of to try to fix things. Now, the smartest thing to do for myself is move on and learn from it. One of my favorite books of all time is The Art of War by Sun Tzu. It has been my reference of strength since I was in my mid-twenties. A great warrior knows when to surrender, and I am doing just that. So, last night I managed to put together this card to cheer me up. As you can see, I used the retired stamp set Serene Snowflakes with the brand new In Colors and card stocks.

Retired BNF Friday #16

I had a really scary experience a couple of days ago. I had the worst headache that I was practically blind. I couldn't see straight, just white flashes and shadows. No medication worked and I literally crawled out of bed to wake-up my daughter for school. I was in tears. Walking hurt too much, any slight movement felt like my entire skull was being crushed. I have had horrible headaches before, but this one was so paralyzing that it really frightened me. I went to my doctor and she thinks it's migraine. She gave me a shot of Toradol on my bum and that was the only thing that helped. I am much better now, but that incident made me realize my own mortality. I really thought, "Is this it? Am I having a stroke and on my way to meet my Maker?" Haha, now I am being overly dramatic.

Oh well, I want to share with you a really cute card I made for today's Retired BNF (But Not Forgotten) Friday post. The stamp set is called Fall for All from the early 2000 I think. I just love this set and have found a way to use if every once in a while. It's definitely a nice set for coloring and shading.

Retired BNF Friday #15

It seems like it has been ages since I posted a Retired BNF (But Not Forgotten) Friday entry. My Fridays have been pretty insane as of late, but I managed to put together some Hershey Nuggets Halloween treats to give away and I thought I'd share them with you. They all turned out really cute.

I love making projects like these because I am able to use my stash of retired scraps. I just hate throwing those pretty DSP (Designer Series Papers). The stamp set I used is called Tricky Treats from early 2000. They are one of my favorite Halloween stamps and know will never part with. I love how I can color on the images. I was able to play with my Copic markers. I experimented with different shades of yellows, oranges and grays.

It's going to be a hectic weekend. My mom and her dog Bama have completely and finally moved here in town with us. A big hug of gratitude to my younger sister for flying to Alabama in order to drive mom and Bama back to California. That's all for now, have a great weekend, everybody!

I apologize that I wasn't able to post last Sunday. We went on a short vacation for Labor Day weekend and I have not had the chance to sit down and think about my blog since. It was our first vacation without my son and we missed him. I am sure that it will take some time to get used to. Then in about six years my daughter will leave for college and it will be just hubby and me. Perhaps there will be more time for us to travel as a couple and more time for me to read, write and create.

My daughter really loves the beach. As I was sitting there watching her play in the sand and screaming at the waves, I thought about our childhood and tried to recall a time such as that. It sort of made me sad that for the life of me I couldn't dig anything in my memory vault of a family vacation. Sure, we went on day trips to Antipolo, Luneta and Manila Zoo; but always with aunts and uncles and cousins in a rented jeepney or in my uncle's Ford Fierra. There were times when we tagged along with my dad to Manila cramped in his brown pick-up truck whenever he had to deliver furniture to customers. We also went to watch the Christmas shows outside of COD Department Store in Cubao usually around my birthday when I could pick two toys and my younger sister could pick one (since she wasn't the celebrant). We would then eat at this Chinese Restaurant called Hong Ning, which had the most delicious Pancit Canton and Ampalaya Con Carne I've ever had. I could still taste it to this day. Oh, the simple pleasures of being a child.

In the midst of all those people in the beach, I realized that I could not remember a single present I ever received as a child, but I remember events and places. I remember emotions and tragedies, simple joys and feelings of loss. I remember that we never went on family vacations, but I also know now that as young and broke as our parents were back then...they tried their best. Becoming a parent made me understand. Parenthood made me more forgiving of my parents' shortcomings. They did the best they could with the knowledge and resources they had. It's all good. I must bear this in mind when buying my children "stuff" versus creating happy memories together that will last them a lifetime. We should go on family trips more often, even just weekend getaways...and make deposits to their memory bank.

Oh well, before I get completely sidetracked from the purpose of this post, allow me to share with you a really cute Halloween card. For someone who did not grow-up celebrating Halloween, I sure love this holiday.
