Wear Sunscreen

I apologize that the stamp set I used here has been retired, but I thought it would be appropriate due to the extreme heat we've been experiencing here in Northern California. I'm not big on beaches because I'm too vain to sacrifice my skin. Haha. But I love the smell of the sea and sounds of the waves.

I found this in my inbox of very old emails as I was deleting old messages and I thought it's appropriate for todays' card. 

Wear sunscreen.
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.
Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.
Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday.
Do one thing every day that scares you.
Sing.
Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.
Floss.
Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.
Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.
Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.
Stretch.
Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't.
Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone.
Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's.
Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.
Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.
Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.
Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.
Get to know your parents. You never know when they'll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.
Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.
Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel.
Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.
Respect your elders.
Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.
Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're 40 it will look 85.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.
But trust me on the sunscreen.

From Land to Sea

It's almost Friday! Father's Day is coming up so I want to share this masculine card created with another soon-to-be retired stamp set called, From Land to Sea. It's one of those stamp sets I wish I made an effort to play with a little bit more. I love lighthouses so I know I'm keeping them. It just feels like a waste when stamp sets only get used a couple of times, you know. 

I often find it challenging to design masculine cards, and when I do I try to make more of them. Less than two weeks left before the brand new Stampin' Up! catalog goes public. I have received mine and my wish list is very long. I want so many things from this catalog. I will really need to hustle with my classes and events in order to justify my orders. Oh well, who needs food, right?

I stamped the lighthouse image twice, fussy cut it and adhered on top of the main one using dimensional adhesives.

The Open Sea

To say that it's been an emotional week for me is the understatement of the year. I try every day to remind myself to separate my emotions from whatever it is that's going on at work. Some days, I'm successful and often, it keeps me up at night. It's not easy not to take things personally when you have been doing the same thing for twelve years and it's really hard not to get attached to people when you've worked together just as long. Someone I met very recently told me about how damaging having friends at work can be. All I could think of was, these people are my second family. I spend most of my waking hours with them. I laugh, cry, share meals with them and celebrate special occasions and birthdays with them. We fight, get frustrated with each other and also forgive each other. That's not just friendship, that is the definition of family. So, when I say goodbye to any of them, no matter the circumstances it still gets to me. Oh well, I will be fine. A little card making and a glass of wine will soothe me. 

My husband has been such an awesome source of support for me especially lately when I'd come home looking so discouraged. He's my anchor. Truly. So, this card is for him - my childhood sweetheart, my best friend and one true love. Happy Father's Day, love.
I CASED this card from a swap I received from Karin Braxton last year at Convention. I just changed the colors and sentiment. 

This stamp set called The Open Sea has just been recently retired, but I know it's an absolute keeper.

Traveler & Going Global

Today is my son's 22nd birthday. As I was getting ready for work this morning staring at my reflection in the mirror, I had to pause and remind my aging face that I have a 22 year old child. Hence, the fine lines and wrinkles. My goodness, it seems like yesterday when I was a very anxious mom- to-be awaiting for my firstborn's birth and then here I am. Time surely is one of those things in life we can't see but we can definitely feel. I have this photo of him from when he was in kindergarten on our fridge. And sometimes I still catch myself thinking of him as that little boy who first discovered that he liked to dance. He's been dancing ever since. Recently, his passion for dance has taken him to different places and so in honor of his birthday I would like to share this card created with the Traveler and Going Global stamp sets and World Map background stamp.

The Wilderness Awaits

When I was in fifth grade I had to live with my maternal grandparents in the province because my paternal grandparents who raised me went to Canada to visit my aunt. I remember this one particular afternoon when I came home from school after placing 2nd at an academic contest. I showed my grandpa the ribbon I got and as he was looking at my prize he got in front of my face and told me, "You know being second is good, but let me tell you what would be great...being first. First means you are ahead of everybody else. First means you're the BEST!" My grandpa was in politics so he was loud all the time. Not in a rude way, but he had this powerful voice that was both inspiring and annoying (at least to a twelve year old girl). Of course it was not his intention to discount my efforts but to challenge me. And boy, did I take that taunt like you would not believe. I was restless and annoyed at the same time. I had to prove myself. So, the next day I told my teacher I wanted to sign-up for the Spelling Bee contest. For eighteen months, I studied. I read day and night learning every word my mind could absorb. I watched my cousins play outside or in the fields, while I buried my head in the dictionary. I was obsessed. I had a mission and that was to prove I could be first. I won the Spelling competition 3x. As a matter of fact, I was the very first student our school ever sent to Regionals. I got that far. However, just like all things, my lucky streak ended and I eventually lost. I was so disappointed in myself. My grandfather with his very loud laugh told me, "Why are you sulking? You got the gold and you've made your point! Go out and play!" I had no idea at that time that those couple of years were going to be a defining moment in my life. From then on, each and every time I would doubt myself, I'd close my eyes and think of that twelve year old girl who got the gold because she worked hard and believed in herself. 

To this day I think one of the very few people who got me and knew how to push my buttons was my maternal grandfather. He teased and provoked me because he knew that I would get back at him by proving him wrong each and every time. He also knew that my obsessions usually had an expiration date. He knew that given enough time and once I got it out of my system, I'd lose interest eventually and that would be it. He gave my Spelling Bee obsession two years and he was right. I remember another time when I told him I wanted to become a fashion designer and instead of fighting with me, he just said okay. That fixation ended after eight months. I also dated this boy whom everybody said he and his family were only after our land. Our relatives told my grandpa to stop me from getting involved with him. My grandpa instead of getting angry and telling me to stop seeing the boy just grinned and watched it all end in a few months. He knew I am that way with things, people and hobbies. He told me one time that I would someday find something that I'd stick to simply because it will bring me joy like nothing else could. The other day as I was doing the dishes, it just hit me. This unexplainable ache and longing for him. I guess that's just how life works. No one really completely gets over a loss of a loved one. It could be a song, a certain smell or even a movie, a favorite dish, a particular month or date. It will just come to you at the most unexpected moment. How you wish you could get another chance to hear their voice, get a hug, see their smile or just hang out with them one last time. I wish he lived long enough to meet my children and to see how my life turned out. This post is for you, Tatay Mading. Happy birthday! I miss you every day of my life.

Swap Cards Share

I am back from Stampin' Up! Convention and I am tired, but it was oh so wonderful. I hung-out with a friend I met six years ago every now and again, but for the most part, I flew solo. I have definitely grown. I would not have dared to go by myself a decade ago. Just the thought of not knowing anyone would have been terrifying to a much younger me. I purchased a selfie stick and used it every chance I got. My friend Priscilla and I laughed each time I would whip out that selfie stick from my purse. We were like teenagers and it was hilarious! It definitely helped to entertain us while waiting for sessions to start and even for our table at the Cheesecake Factory. We truly enjoyed taking selfies.

I so loved my hotel room, especially when I was checking-in and I found out I was an elite member (I just love rewards/points) and got full access to the Concierge Lounge. I enjoyed the free breakfast in the morning, appetizers and desserts in the afternoon, unlimited drinks and free wifi. Every night, I would drink my wine while take a long bubble bath, then watch TV until I fell asleep. Every afternoon, I would sneak-out of convention, ran back to the hotel and take a nap. And as fate would have it, this amazing hotel is right next door to my favorite place, Nordstrom. It was their Anniversary Sale, so I bought a few things. I was actually surprised that I managed to control myself. Perhaps seeing the new Stampin' Up! Holiday Catalog helped me hold back. Haha! 

I had a wonderful time swapping cards with other demonstrators and also learning/sharing ideas with so many of them. They are all so inspiring, creative and talented. I want to share a few of the cards I made for swaps.

Retired BNF Friday #30

Happy Friday, everyone! It has been a very busy week and I just want to pop-in to share a card. I really enjoyed making this. The stamp set is very old from the early 2000 something I think. It's called Water Mill. As soon as I saw the brand new textured embossing folder Brick Wall (138286), I thought of this stamp set. I watercolored the image using classic stamp pads and Aqua Painters. So relaxing and therapeutic.

Walk in the Wild

Every once in a while, my body demands for a time-out. Last Friday morning, I could not get up. I slept for ten hours the night before and I did not have the strength to get out of bed all day Friday. I had a headache, felt achy all over and my throat was hurting so badly. I have been feeling weary the past few weeks, but I had to keep pushing myself because I have a ton of things to do. My check list is long and it seems that each time I check a task a new one gets added to it. I can't seem to get ahead. I was extremely exhausted. And in as much as I HATE calling in sick, I did. I slept all day. I was a lazy bum and I did not like that at all. What a waste of a perfectly good day off! I suppose my body knew it needed a break and it was going to have it whether I wanted to or not. Sleep to me has always been a necessary evil. I feel guilty when I sleep too much (to me, like 6 hours) because I know there are things to be done. However, as I am getting older realizing that not sleeping enough makes the engine to force shut down. 



Oh well, I want to share a masculine card in honor Father's Day. This is the card I sent my dad. I got this idea from Kay Kalthoff. She is such an amazing lady and very talented. I met her at Convention a couple of years ago and she was very kind and down to earth. I hope to bump into her again next month at Convention. 

The stamp set I used is called Walk in the Wild and has been retired. I find it so challenging to create masculine cards. Perhaps because they usually have to be plain and kind of boring. Clean & simple cards without bling or glitters. Blech! Haha. This turned out really nice though. I just love this Designer Series Paper called Sweater Weather, reminds me of a Burberry pattern, right?

Moon Lake

I want to share a card I made with one of my favorite stamp sets in the current Stampin' Up! 2015 Occasions Catalog called Moon Lake. As always, the stamped images are perfect to watercolor. I tend to gravitate towards the same style no matter how much I try not to. I am dull and I don't deny it. Haha. Anyway, this is one of the cards we will create in my Stamp-a-Stack event on Saturday. It will be perfect for Father's Day or masculine birthday.

Green Beers on St. Patty's Day

Happy St. Patrick's Day, everyone. Everybody's Irish today, right? I want to share a card I made using an oldie but goodie stamp set called, Cheers to You. What an awesome masculine card, right? 


I used Crystal Effects and then sprinkled with Dazzling Diamonds Glitter to give a 3D look on the foam of the beers.

Perfect Blend

What is it about coffee? I have given-up soda, other sugary drinks and alcohol in my quest to live a healthier lifestyle; yet I lack the courage to give-up my coffee. I also know that I am not into it because of the caffeine. I don't buy fancy and expensive coffee from Starbucks or other Coffee places. I brew my own fancy coffee. The smell of a freshly brewed coffee simply awakens my senses and drinking it slowly is a ritual that I have been enjoying for most of my adult life. Some people start their days with yoga or go for a run (I don't understand why, haha), I have my coffee while the house is quiet and still asleep. I gather my thoughts, check my emails or simply just read. Growing up in the Philippines, I confess that my grandpa gave me sips of coffee when I was a little girl. This was one of my fondest memories of him. I remember him coming home from work in the afternoons to have his snack aka merienda. He'd smell of sweat and the sun, sit on his chair in our back patio wiping his perspiration with a white face towel that had a "Good Morning" printed in red ink on the edge of it which always hung on his neck. I'd sit on his lap and we'd share a tall glass of hot instant black coffee, often with a couple of bread rolls aka pandesal that I would tear small pieces of to dip in the coffee then eat. And on those many days when I'd tag along with him to work, we would have our merienda at the little shack of a store in the corner of the cemetery, always hot instant coffee. My grandpa did not drink his coffee in a cup or mug, it was in a tall jar of recycled Nescafe glass (as with most of our drinking glasses back then). He would always have the first sip to make sure it was not too hot for me. He loved me so and God knows I miss him every day of my life. So, to this moment each and every time I'd smell or drink coffee, I think of my grandpa and without fail be transported to those times when I was safe and happy in his arms. Sometimes I could still smell him and some mornings when everything is really silent, I could still hear the softness of his voice. Perhaps drinking coffee for me is more of a sentimental experience and the taste is just a plus. This card is for you, Grandpa - thank you for our many coffee memories.

I really love this Perfect Blend stamp set. It is very versatile and also a great set for masculine cards or coffee gift cards. I am glad it has been carried over to the brand new catalog.

Retired BNF Friday #27

Happy Friday, everyone! Well, in honor of Earth Day this past Tuesday I am sharing with you this masculine birthday card with trees on them. Time is running out before the 2012/2014 In Colors will be retired. Midnight Muse and Gumball Green combo? Very nice, right? Stampin' Up! published the retiring list this week and I was shocked at how much items are going to say farewell. I was sad, but not as much as how I normally would since I changed how I run my events/classes last year. Most of my gals are makers, so they just choose and pay for the cards they make. They don't care if I use current or retired items as long as the projects are nice.

True Love

I believe that a single decision changed my life forever. Twenty years ago today dressed in Levi's jeans, white t-shirt and a pair of Tretorn shoes, witnessed by my dear grandmother and aunt, I married my husband in the municipal hall officiated by the mayor of our hometown. There was no wedding cake, no guests, not even a wedding ring. My husband and I kissed and promised each other our love and devotion until death do us part. And the rest is history.

Surely, after twenty years of marriage most of the romance was replaced by duties and chores. Over the years, working and raising our children have been the main focus of our daily lives. Admittedly, sometimes I feel like we've forgotten how to just be a couple anymore. We're parents, so it frightens me to think how we're going to cope once the nest is empty. Perhaps we can travel then. To be able to just get in the car and drive. In the mean time, I am grateful that I have been married to my childhood sweetheart just about half of my life. Every so often, I'd still catch a glimpse of that boy I met thirty years ago and without fail still feel butterflies in my stomach. Just a few weeks back, we met at Safeway (yep you got it, Safeway) so I could shop during my lunch break and he could then bring the groceries home. I was standing in the middle of the cereal aisle when he walked towards me with a smile and winked. Just like that, my knees weakened, my heart skipped a beat and time stood still even just for a very brief moment. I guess that's how I know that after all these many years, he is still the one for me. There was no extravagant wedding, but he's made me so happy and given me the most amazing marriage...dull and uneventful to many, full of butterflies, nonetheless.


I wanted to make this card colorful, but since it's for my husband I thought he'd appreciate this more. I used Papillon Potpourri and Best of Butterflies stamp set. I had the sentiment custom made in the Philippines. Huge thanks to my Tita Ising who had it done for me. She is awesome!

Father's Day 2013

I apologize for being MIA the past few weeks. I have been very ill and in horrible pain the last nine days. I am going to spare you the details. Besides I really have no words to describe what I went through. This morning was the very first time in a while that I felt a little better. I am still very exhausted, but I am hoping that complete recovery is ahead.

I made this card a month ago using the stamp set called Countryside (now retired), but never had the chance to share with you. So, here it is. I heat embossed the image using Versa mark ink pad and Early Espresso embossing powder.

Feeling Sentimental

I had a very slow start to my Sunday. I have not been able to sleep much the past couple of weeks. Although, I've really never needed plenty of sleep to function, it's still very annoying to just lay in bed night after night with your eyes closed, yet your mind awake. I think I am more tired trying so hard to fall asleep than my lack of sleep, if that even makes any sense.

Retired BNF Friday #19

The first full work-week of 2013 was very busy, but nice. I had to constantly remind myself each time I sign something of the new year. Yet, I know I will be writing down 2012 for quite some time, then I will get the hang of it. And by that time, it will be 2014. Such is life.

As I was going through my stash of greeting cards, I noticed that I don't have very many Masculine cards in my reserve. I decided to put together one from one of my favorite stamp sets called Coast to Coast. I have always loved light houses and it is my dream to one day visit one.

Life is a Ticket

I have not forgotten about my blog. I've just had a hectic start to 2013 and have not had much time to create anything to share. Between the holidays and family visits, it's been really busy...yet also wonderful. My nieces and nephew are getting much bigger and it brings me joy to be around them.

Around this time ten years ago, we were all in the Philippines. We celebrated the holidays there and had this amazing grand reunion with our relatives that we have not seen in a very long time. So much has happened since then. Children grew-up, babies were born and loved ones died, to name a few. In the grandiose scheme of life, ten years really does not seem like a lot, right? I used to not think much of years, but as I get older I am learning a much deeper perspective of time as they come at me in seconds, in minutes and in days.

I found myself at a fork in the road a few weeks ago. I have always been cursed with the inability to say no. I am the oldest, it's my job to please and make everybody happy. That's how I was raised. However, lately I have recognized the importance of redefining many things in my life, and that includes the phrase, "no, thank you". It was so foreign to me that I did not know what to do at first. I had to ask myself just one question: Will the gain be more valuable than how much it will cost me now? And again, with time being measured in nano seconds and not in years.

One of the best gifts of aging is wisdom. I know that now. What was once very important to me, no longer applies. As life changes, so do we...whether we like it or not. My resolution this year is only one, to enjoy and to take advantage of my one-time admission to the greatest show on earth called life. I hope that you will all join me in doing the same.

Father's Day 2012

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there! I meant to post earlier, but the day got awfully hectic pretty fast and haven't had the chance to sit down until now. We had lunch at the newly opened Lumberjacks Diner today. They were packed! My kids played tic-tac-toe while we were waiting for our waiter. They were laughing and giving each other a hard time...just being siblings. I just sat there taking it all in...all my blessings and how truly lucky I am to have been happily (on most days - ha) married to my childhood sweetheart all these many years, to have two awesome kids and to have an entourage of strong and fabulous women supporting me no matter what. I have everything any girl could ever want. I had my last SAS (Stamp-a-Stack) class yesterday before I go on medical leave and the outpouring of love and well wishes from these wonderful ladies are just very touching. After they left, I sat down and realized how lucky I am (once again) to have friends who come over to create beautiful things with me and order Stampin' Up! products from me, right? I've heard runners talking about runner's high - that's why they do it. I guess, I get the rubber stamping high. It's such a good feeling when these ladies ooohs and aaahhhs over my samples in class. They keep me motivated and inspired. It's such a great feeling when I can share my passion with other people. Anyway, I know the stamp sets I used here have just been retired, we made them in class last month and I want to share them with you.

Retired BNF Friday #9

Well, what da ya know, it's Friday once again! This week went by too fast for me. I didn't even have to ask, "Is it Friday yet?" when I returned to the office last Monday. Every single day was a full day. Oh well, this weekend I have to do plenty of chores and also to prepare for my upcoming class next Saturday. No down time in sight...aughh! However, it helps that my kids are out of school for the summer.

Father's Day is coming up, so I thought I'd share a card from the recently retired Totally Tool Stamp Set.  I was bummed to see this one go, because it's such a versatile and cute masculine set.

Retired BNF Friday #7

Well, the countdown for the last day of the school year is definitely on. This is my kids' last Friday of school, next Thursday will be my son's High School graduation. It has been crazy busy. My days have been filled with tasks and dates/deadlines to remember, both in the office and at home. Sometimes I amaze myself how I do it all and still manage to stay sane (most of the time...smile). Oh well, c'est la vie! My final Stampin' Up! order for the 2011/2012 Catalog came in last night. I was up late playing with my sneak peek goodies. I got the new In Colors and I have not made up my mind if I like the reconfigured stamp pads. I feel it's too juicy for me. Hahaha!

Oh well, I have two cards to share today for my son's upcoming graduation. The first one is from my all-time faves, Sail Away; and the other one is from the recent Sale-a-Bration stamp sets called Sprinkled Expressions. I am completely in-love with Sponge Daubers! All these many years I have been using the sponges, but the daubers are more precise and it gives off more impact just like when I used them in the background night sky of this sail boat and the waves. Plus I love how it fits in my finger. I am seriously contemplating on using it to apply my makeup. Hahaha.
